Once you have a baby, it can seem like your money is just disappearing! Babies need a lot of necessaries, and unfortunately this doesn’t help your wallet. And why do we spend so much on our children? We want the best for them, of course.
Unfortunately, this can put a lot of financial strain on the parents. One way to avoid going into mounds of debt on a child, is to make a lot of baby necessities yourself!
Whether you’re an avid crafter, or you’ve just trying to save some extra cash, making items yourself can be fun and humbling!
The easiest product to start with is the much needed baby blanket. But, what’s the best yarn for baby blankets?
Whether you’ve knitted before or not, there are many free tutorials online to help you learn the basics.
To knit your own baby blanket, you’ll need yarn.
Now this is where things can get tricky. There are so many different yarns that it can be hard to decide which one is the best yarn for baby blankets. In fact, certain yarns are better for baby blankets than others.
Think about it, would your baby be comfortable snuggling with a scratchy wool blanket?
Probably not. The skin of a baby is incredibly sensitive, and therefore you will need yarns that are soft and delicate. There are a few other qualities that may be specific to your baby’s blanket!
Choosing Yarn for Baby Blankets
Gauge: This is the stitches per inch, or also referred to as the tension of the yarn. To find the gauge of a yarn, you can simply count the number of stitches over 6 inches and then divide the number by 6. Having the correct gauge will ensure that you’re knitting will look exactly like the finished product you’re trying to achieve.
Yarn Weight: The weight of your yarn greatly affects the product you’re trying to achieve because specific yarn weights are better for certain projects. Both lightweight and more bulky yarn weights can work equally well for baby blankets, as they qualities are also depend on the season the baby is born in.
Fiber: Since this is a baby blanket, any harsh fibers like wool are not recommended. Stick to softer fibers like acrylic, cotton, or bamboo. These will not upset a baby’s sensitive skin or irritate them.
Washable: The last thing you want to do is spend time on knitting your baby a blanket, and then find out it’s not washable. Babies can spit up at any time, and you want to be able to run it through a quick wash. Plus, the last thing you want is your baby to stain your lovely creation.
Dye lots: If your baby blanket calls for more than one skein of yarn, you want to make sure that you’re going to receive the same color. Yarns are dyed in lots, meaning it’s very hard to make yarn from different lots to see the exact same color. Buying yarn from the same dye lots can combat this, and ensure your yarn will all be the same color.

Qualities to Consider in Yarn for Baby Blanket
Color: While this may seem obvious, color has a large impact on the end result of your baby blanket. Are you looking for a brighter color or a more pastel color? Certain brands have lines that are designed with bright colors, sparkle in yarn, or lighter colors. Make sure you read reviews, on whether the color pictures are true to color of the yarn.
Texture: Blankets can feel incredibly different based on the yarn that’s used, even baby blankets! This could also depend on the season the baby is born in, as winter babies would benefit more from a bulky and chenille-style yarn, while summer babies want a thinner yarn that adds more breathability.
Price: Certain types of yarns are definitely more expensive than others. It depends on how much you are willing to spend. Keep in mind, since this is a baby blanket, it probably won’t get much use past the first year. Babies grow fast, so you may even want to knit a slightly larger blanket to make it last longer. Acrylic, cotton, and polyester yarns tend to be more affordable, while alpaca and bamboo yarns are on the pricier side.
While it may seem like a lot of options just to choose yarn for a baby blanket, this is a large project. It’s much easier to go to the store and purchase a cute baby blanket, but making one is a gift that is irreplaceable. Plus, it’s a gift made of love that is unique. No other blanket in the store is going to resemble the one you’ve made.
Whether it’s a gift or you’re making this blanket for your little one, there can be a lot of concerns about the safety of the baby. All and all, the safety of the baby is the main concern.
Want to make sure you’re making a safe baby blanket? Knitting a blanket that has tight stitches can help keep the baby safe. Very loose knitted blankets can allow the baby to pull individual strings of yarn, creating a choking hazard. Do not knit patterns with holes in the blanket, so the baby can’t put their fingers in the yarn.
Also, ensuring there aren’t any loose strings at the end of the blanket that the baby can pull, will help keep them from getting into a sticky situation. Being aware of the season the baby will be using this blanket in can also help.
For example, not making an extremely bulky warm blanket during the summer months will prevent the baby from overheating.
Overall, making a baby blanket is a big accomplish that many shy away from!
Give yourself some credit for the work you’ve put into an item, it shows this new human is already loved. Regardless of the yarn you use for the baby blanket, a cute baby will make your blanket look stellar. Good luck!

Equipping yourself with the best items, like a great wool blanket, can sometimes be the difference between life and death.
It isn’t just leisurely trips that could benefit from lifesaving products, but those in the military are usually required to have a wool blanket included in their pack.
Wool blankets are known for having great qualities that can aid in emergency situations, but also are great blankets that will keep you extremely warm and are water repellent in wet climates.
Benefits of a Wool Blanket
There is a reason wool blankets can be used as emergency blankets, and are also great camping blankets. They have great qualities that not a lot of people are aware of!
Warmth: Wool is most widely known for its ability to provide warmth and regulate your individual body temperature, which most use to keep them warm during the winter. Wool is great at insulating, in order to keep warm air in, but it’s also great at doing the opposite when it’s warm outside.
Breathability: Surprisingly, good quality wool blankets provide warmth and breathability. Most synthetic fibers on the other hand, do not make breathable fabrics. As wool keeps you warm during the colder months, it can also use its breathability to keep you cool during the warmer months by letting air in and getting rid of other heat and moisture.
Water-resistant: Wool naturally repels water, making it a great fabric to use for outdoor blankets in wet climates, or emergency blankets in order to keep moisture out. This also makes it resistant to rot, mold, and mildew!
Fire-retardant: Wool is also naturally fire retardant, so it’s a great blanket to use by the campfire where other blankets could easily catch fire. This is also another great quality for an emergency blanket in case you need to extinguish a fire, you can cover it with a wool blanket.
Anti-allergenic: Wool does not keep static, so it does not attract dust and dirt. Those that are allergic or extremely sensitive to dust or house mites, may see benefits when switching their bedding to wool instead of a heavy duvet or comforter.
Care Instructions of a Wool Blanket
Since not many know about the benefits of wool, then it’s likely they don’t know about how to care for wool.
When wool gets dirty, the dirt sits on the surface of the fiber, so it does not take much to clean it. However, when you do it’s important to know how to treat a wool blanket, as it’s not the same as other blankets.
Brush your blanket. Regularly brushing your wool blankets with a soft-bristle brush will help to improve the structural strength of the blanket and will also make the surface of the blanket not so hard. Just brush down the long axis of the blanket.
Immediately clean liquid stains from blanket. Wool is naturally water repellent but after soaking for a few minutes in its dense fabric, the stains will stay. After that, they are incredibly hard to remove. To clean stains, take warm water and mild detergent to soak the area you spilled and blot.
Wash on cold water and with wool safe detergent. Since dirt sits on the top layer of wool, you simply can put your wool blanket in the washer with cold water and your wool safe detergent, allowing it to soak for 15 minutes in the detergent/water. Then put the washer on a gentle cycle, letting it run for about 2 minutes. Stop the cycle, and manually switch to a rinse cycle. That’s all!
Air dry your blanket. On the reviews of most wool blankets, there are comments about the wool blanket falling apart in the dryer or continuing to shed. In order to avoid this it’s important to air dry your blanket while also washing your wool blanket properly. The dryer can crush the wool fibers and destroy the softness of them.
Whether you’re looking for just a wool blanket to use during the winter or an emergency blanket, this is a great option for the price.

Mattress Pads / Marissa Gvozdenovich
There are several different types of sleeping pads, all of which share the goal of providing a barrier between you and the ground and adding comfort in a camping or camping-like situation. Self-inflating sleeping pads are just one type of sleeping pad that does this.
Unlike a regular sleeping pad, a self-inflating pad borrows the concept of an air mattress to add comfort without bulk. As a result, the best way to describe a self-inflating sleeping pad is to imagine a sponge on top of an air pocket with a fabric covering. It works when the sponge (aka a thin foam mattress) sucks in air, inflating the air pocket, and it can be compressed by simply squeezing the air out of the sponge. Since there is no need for air pumps or electricity, a self-inflating sleeping pad is perfect for camping or backpacking trips.
Self-Inflating Sleeping Pads— What to Consider
Valve Type: In order for a self-inflating sleeping pad to inflate and deflate, there needs to be a controlled way for air to get in and out—this is the job of the valve. Generally, self-inflating sleeping pads have either one valve that inflates and deflates the pad or two valves, one for inflating and one for deflating. Valves usually work by twisting a mechanism that allows air to flow, but many of them also allow for manual inflation. So, if the pad doesn’t fully inflate on its own, you can add a few puffs of air to help it expand completely. Usually you will find the valves located on a corner, or corners, of the sleeping pad.
Durability: Since sleeping pads will often be placed on rough terrain, durability is a major factor to consider if you want to be able to use your sleeping pad multiple times. Even when placing it on the tent floor, there is a high potential for punctures or rips that could ruin the pad. Because of this, you will want to find a sleeping pad with a durable outer shell. A term that outdoor enthusiasts use for this is denier, which refers to the thickness of fabric. As you can imagine, the higher the denier, the thicker and more durable the fabric will be, but this could also mean more weight. The goal is to find a balance between durability and weight that meets your needs. But, if you are using your sleeping pad on a cot or surface other than the ground, durability and denier may not be as important to you.
Insulation & Thickness: Part of a sleeping pad’s job is to provide a barrier between you and the surface you are sleeping on, which could be the cold, hard ground. Because of this, you will want a sleeping pad that is thick enough and insulated well enough to keep the cold from the ground away from you while you sleep.
The overall thickness of a self-inflating sleeping pad depends on the height of the foam pad plus the amount of air used to inflate it. You will find that most of these pads are 3 inches thick or less when fully inflated. If you are looking for a lighter pad, you could find one with less foam and more space for air, while a heavyweight pad would be made up of more foam than air.
Since self-inflating sleeping pads need to be able to draw air in on their own, they are insulated with open cell foam, which closely resembles, and works like, a sponge. Luckily, open cell foam is a better insulator than closed cell foam (i.e. a memory foam mattress), so it will do a better job blocking cool air from the ground. An easy way to tell how well the pad insulates is to look at its R-value; the higher the R-value, the warmer you will be. Usually an R-value of 3 is for general purposes, but you should look for an R-value of 5 or higher for particularly cold temperatures.
Size & Shape: Self-inflating sleeping pads are usually either rectangular or mummy-shaped, which is basically a narrower rectangle with rounded corners. But, they do come in many different lengths and widths. Be sure to find a sleeping pad that, first, accommodates your body, and second, matches up with the sleeping bag, cot, or tent you will be using with it. If your sleeping pad is too short or narrow for you, it won’t be able to provide enough comfort or insulation. Another point you may want to consider is how much weight the sleeping pad can hold without losing air. Similarly, a sleeping pad that is a bad fit for the rest of your equipment won’t be able to meet your needs.
Comfort: Comfort is one of the main reasons campers purchase sleeping pads. Not only do sleeping pads add comfort by keeping you warmer, but they are also able to mask the painful imperfections of the terrain you are sleeping on. Some self-inflating sleeping pads have specialized cell designs to address individual preferences, while others provide more comfort by using thicker foam pads inside. Additionally, you can control the amount of air your sleeping pad takes in, which allows you to customize the comfort level. Some campers have found that sleeping on your back while on an inflated pad can help distribute your weight, which also adds comfort. In the end, comfort is a matter of your personal taste.

What Else Should You Consider When Using and Purchasing Self-Inflating Sleeping Pads?
Even though there are several factors to take into account when purchasing and using self-inflating sleeping pads, paying attention to detail could help you find the perfect one for you on the first attempt. First, consider the price. The sleeping pads listed above range in price from $30 to $85, but if you are looking for one that is more professional grade, you could spend several hundred dollars. With all of the equipment that goes into a successful camping expedition, it is important to think about where you want to spend the majority of your budget, and it may or may not be on a self-inflating sleeping pad. Luckily, there are options at every price point.
Next, consider any accessories you may need that aren’t included with the pad itself. Although many of the sleeping pads listed above come with their own compression bands and carrying sack, some don’t, so if those items would be helpful to you, be sure to opt for a sleeping pad that comes with its own extras. Aside from compression bands and carrying sacks, an important accessory that may prove to be necessary is a repair kit. Some of the pads on the list include a repair kit, but if your choice doesn’t, a repair kit is an inexpensive way to avoid sleeping on a flat pad.
In addition, be aware of the fact that, like air mattresses, self-inflating sleeping pads may make some noise when you change positions at night. If this is something that could bother you (or your partner), you may want to find a pad that is more foam than air, or simply not inflate it to max capacity. By the same token, you want a sleeping pad that only loses air when you want it to. Some self-inflating pads may leak and gradually flatten throughout the night. A quality valve and durable materials could remedy that.
Self-Inflating Sleeping Pads— Final Thoughts
Self-inflating sleeping pads are a sleeping pad and hassle-free air mattress all in one. Although there are many factors to consider when purchasing one, keep in mind that all of it comes down to comfort level, which is different for everyone. So, the best self-inflating sleeping pad is the one that meets all of your needs and checks off all of your criteria.

When you think of summer, you probably envision yourself lounging on the beach, enjoying the nice weather while you listen to the waves crashing.
Yet, not every summer day is filled with clear blue skies, and visits to the beach. Some are filled with rain or heavy storms that turn into impromptu movie days.
Others may reach lower temperatures, towards you get to the end of summer. Not to mention, the days may be hot, but depending where you live, the nights can still get pretty chilly. And what can make your dreary summer days better? A comfy summer blanket.
We all tend to have quite the collection of winter blankets because with all the comfy fabrics and patterns, they’re hard to resist! But a search for a summer blanket?
Those are much harder to find. Plus, when you’re planning for summer, a beach blanket sounds more fun.
Yet, summer blankets can be extremely useful if you’re in a climate with weather that fluctuates, or you tend to spend a lot of summer nights outside when the temperature has dropped.
The best summer blankets have a couple of qualities to look for.
Regular Blanket vs Summer Blanket
First, you may be wondering how is a summer blanket any different from a regular blanket? Depending on the purpose of your blanket, there may not be a difference, but most likely your wool winter blanket wouldn’t help you in the summer heat.
A blanket for the summer is more equivalent to a throw blanket you’d keep on your couch. Their purpose is to add a layer of warmth, just like wearing a light sweater.
Usually they tend to be more loose knits, giving breathability, and they’re more lightweight to adhere to the warmer climate. Let’s get a little more in depth.
Qualities of a Summer Blanket
Lightweight: Even if it gets chilly during a summer day, you don’t want an extremely thick fabric. Look for fabrics that can be made into a thin blanket like cotton, polyester, or bamboo. A thinner blanket will be better suited for the season, and can always be layered with other blankets to provide more warmth.
Breathable: Finding a blanket that is made out of a breathable fabric will prevent trapping unnecessarily heat in the blanket with you, and overheating you. The goal of a great summer blanket is not to create a barrier between you and outside, but rather to add a layer of warmth. A breathable fabric give you the perfect balance. Look for cotton and bamboo fabrics!
Cool: This may seem obvious, but looking for blankets with cooling properties is great for those that are looking to use their summer blankets inside. If you suffer from fibromyalgia, you might want to upgrade your mattress. The right mattress can significantly help with any pain and discomfort that you might be experiencing. Many people with fibromyalgia may be making their symptoms worse by sleeping on an unsupportive mattress. Now, you can’t expect a mattress to completely cure your fibromyalgia. A good, supportive mattress can make a big difference in your everyday life and how much of an effect your pain has on you.
Since buying a new mattress is such a big deal, we wanted to make this easier on you. First, take a look at the important considerations to think about when you’re shopping for a mattress for fibromyalgia. Then, we’ll show you five of the best mattresses for fibromyalgia. It’s worth noting that we don’t want to make this decision for you. This is your mattress, so you should consider what you truly want. We have ranked the best ones in order, but our number one might not be yours.
It can be beneficial to speak with your doctor as well. They might have suggestions regarding mattress factors or mattresses in general. This can also be useful since they know your condition very well! Use these resources to help you with your research so that you can find a great mattress to improve your health condition!
What Should I Consider When Shopping for a Mattress for Fibromyalgia?
When you’re shopping for any type of item, you should know exactly what you’re looking for. Every purchase you make should involve some thoughtful consideration. This is even more important for health products or larger purchases. For example, a mattress to improve your health condition fits under both of those categories.
You might not even know where to begin though. We’ve broken it down for you so that you can easily find what you’re looking for in a mattress. These are a few of the biggest considerations to make when it comes to shopping for a mattress for fibromyalgia.
Keep in mind that these are based upon personal preference for the most part. Use your own opinions to decide what’s essential for you and what you can leave behind!
One of the biggest things to think about is how supportive your mattress should be. You should look for a very supportive mattress because that will help with your fibromyalgia. At the same time, it shouldn’t be too supportive that it is hard against your body.
You might have to try out a few different mattresses in order to find that one that works well for your needs. If you’re ordering a mattress online and don’t want to worry about returning it, you can look for a mattress with medium firmness or support.
While you do need a supportive mattress for your fibromyalgia, you should also think about how you want the mattress to feel. This is a necessity if you share a bed with your partner too. In short, look for a mattress with medium support. If you need to, you can go more or less supportive.
Mattresses are available in a variety of thicknesses. Some mattresses only come in one thickness option and others come in more. If you want a soft or plush surface, you should look for a thick mattress. If you want a firmer surface, you should purchase a thinner mattress.
For fibromyalgia, it’s smart to choose a mattress with a medium thickness. This will give you the firmness and support that you need without being too hard.
Size might seem like a simple factor to keep in mind. It can sometimes be overlooked though, so make sure you know exactly what size bed you have. It can even be helpful to take measurements just in case anything is abnormal.
When you’re buying a new mattress, it can also be a good time to upgrade your entire sleeping situation. If you want to get a king size bed, it’s wise to do it when you’re already shopping for a new mattress.
Note that not all mattresses are going to be available in all sizes. Make sure you check before narrowing down your search. Also, just because one retailer doesn’t carry a mattress in the size that you need doesn’t mean that another won’t!
Sometimes, if specific products have been created for certain illnesses and diseases, they will cost more money. In reality, you don’t necessarily need a fibromyalgia mattress. You need a mattress that can help with your fibromyalgia. Be aware of high price tags for fibromyalgia-specific beds.
Before you begin shopping, figure out what your budget is. Look around at mattress pricing to see about how much you might be spending. Additionally, watch for sales and discounts. Shopping online is a great way to save money. You can compare all of the different prices in one spot. You can also find sales more easily.
If you’re spending a lot of money on a mattress, you want to make sure that it’s going to last. It can be hard to tell whether or not a mattress is going to last long until you actually bring it home and sleep on it for a while.
One way to check a mattress’s durability is to look at the reviews that have been written about it. Try to find reviews from people who have been using the mattress for a couple of years.
With more and more mattresses becoming available online, the focus on luxury or high-end mattress companies has gone down. There are countless mattresses out there that don’t have a well-known brand name on them.
If buying a mattress from a brand name is important to you, you should do that. Still, it’s a good idea to look at the less popular brands. Some of those mattresses are just as good or better!
Some mattresses come with warranties. These are helpful in protecting you against manufacturer complications. Be sure to read a warranty agreement so that you know exactly what is covered and what isn’t. Not all mattress companies offer warranties. They can also have differing durations so keep that in mind.
Some mattress companies include trial periods with the purchase of a mattress. These trial periods can be extremely beneficial. You get a chance to try out a mattress before making a final decision. The duration of the period varies by company. Some are a month long and others last an entire year.

These are important to remember so that you can make sure you know exactly what you want.
Additionally, we have rounded up five of the best luxury mattresses on the market.
We have reviewed each of them so that you know everything you need to know about your options.
Let’s get into the necessary factors to consider and then take a look at the amazing luxury mattresses available!
What Should I Consider When Shopping for a Luxury Mattress?
When you begin shopping for any major item, you should know what you want to keep an eye out for. The same goes for luxury mattresses. There are certain considerations that you should make and some factors that are very important.
As you take a look at the considerations, figure out which ones are the most important to you.
These are all based on your own personal preferences so that you can make the best decision for your sleep. This will help you to decide what to focus on when it comes time to buy a luxury mattress!
Price is definitely important with any purchase you will make. Mattresses can be pretty expensive as they are, and luxury ones are even pricier. It’s a good idea to look around to get an estimate of how much a luxury mattress will cost you. From that price point, you can budget accordingly. Work with your partner, if you have one, to decide what is reasonable based on your income.
A great way to save money on a mattress is by shopping online. You can compare prices easily and watch for sales and discount codes. Of course, if this is a more urgent purchase you might not have these opportunities.
You might think that all luxury mattresses are durable, but this isn’t always the case. Just because you’re paying more for something doesn’t mean it’s higher quality.
Before you make a purchase, you should look at reviews from people who have had the mattress for a couple of years. If they still love it and don’t have any complaints, it’s probably a good choice!
Durability might be less important to you if you are using the mattress less frequently, such as in a guest bedroom. Still, you want to make sure that you are getting a good quality mattress that will last for more than a few years!
Many mattresses come with warranties. These offer extra protection in case anything would happen to your mattress. The way that warranties work varies by the company.
Warranties can be different durations of time. Some cover almost any damage and others are very limited. When you’re buying a luxury mattress, you might want to look for one with a good warranty. This will give you a peace of mind since you probably just spent a lot of money on the mattress.
Some people don’t really care for warranties and would rather just replace the mattress on their own. This works too, but it can get costly to replace your mattress without the company’s help. If you have the money or are purchasing one of the most affordable luxury mattress options, this might work for you too.
Thickness is important to keep in mind, because it can determine the quality of your sleep. Before you go shopping, figure out how thick your current mattress is. If you like that thickness, look for one of about the same thickness. If not, opt for something a little bit different.
In general, thicker mattresses are plusher. Thinner mattresses will be firmer, because you have less material to sink into. There’s no right or wrong answer. It simply depends on your personal preference. If you don’t know what thickness you like the best, go for something in the middle. This should give you a good balance between thick and thin.
Naturally, some mattresses will be firmer and others will be plusher. Which one you choose depends on which one you like best. When people choose firm mattresses, they will be getting a more supportive sleep surface. Plush mattresses can be more comfortable for users and cradle them. When in doubt, go for a medium firmness mattress. This way you can have the best of both worlds!
Some mattress companies will give you a trial period. This isn’t available with all manufacturers, but it’s a nice option to have. Basically, you will get to try a mattress for a given amount of time. After that point, you can choose whether or not to keep the mattress. This is a pretty effective way to make a final decision. Of course, you may not feel the need to test out a mattress so this may not be a deciding factor for you personally.
