Factors To Consider As You Make Your Choice
Horizontal or Vertical Folding:
There are two types of Murphy beds that are available, horizontal folding and vertical folding. Horizontal folding refers to ones that have the hinges on the side of the bed and run along the length of the wall. This style will take up more wall space, but is ideal if you have low ceilings or limited floor space for when the bed is folded out. Vertical folding refers to beds where the hinges are at the head of the bed and it folds up vertically into the wall. It takes up more floor space when folded out and requires that your ceilings be high enough, but it pretty much disappears when folded back up and is great if you are someone who does not want to have to sleep against a wall.
Piston or Spring Mechanism:
This refers to the type of lift mechanism that is used to open and close the bed. Piston mechanisms are smoother and easier to use, requiring almost no effort by the user, and they are designed to last the lifetime of your bed. They are more convenient to use, but of course will cost you significantly more than a spring one. Spring lifts are a bit noisier and not as easy or smooth to use, but they are a fine option as well, especially if you are looking to save a few dollars.
Like with everything we purchase, price is always something that factors into our decision. Murphy beds tend to run more expensive than a typical bed frame and mattress combination, but also keep in mind that in most cases you are not only getting a bed but also a piece of furniture for your money. There are great options out there though, that are affordable for most budgets.
This one should be obvious, considering that most people who will be buying a Murphy bed are looking to save on space, but you need to make sure that the bed will fit in the space you that you have. Make sure that you have enough wall space, ceiling height and floor room to fit your bed when it is both folded up and folded out. Also, consider what size of mattress you will need, as not all Murphy beds are available in a full range of sizes, from twin to king.
These days, Murphy beds are available in a vast range of different styles for you to choose from. There are your more traditional ones that fold up into the wall or closet, other types that fold up into shelves, ones with work spaces built on to them, desks and chest that fold out into beds, and even folding bunk beds. With all the options out there, you should have no problem finding one that fits your exact needs.
Weather you are looking to save space in an urban apartment, turn your office into a spare bedroom when your in-laws come to town, or anything in between, Murphy beds can be a great answer to your need! Just because you are choosing to go with a Murphy bed over a more traditional style bed, does not mean that your need to sacrifice on comfort, convenience, or style. We really like the Nantucket Murphy Bed Chest, and think it would be a great solution to whatever your needs might be, but there are plenty of great options out there to fit your specific needs and taste.
