Puffy Mattress: In-Depth Review by Sleeping Culture 2020

Puffy was launched in 2017 with a design to maximizing sleep health for its users. Puffy has been committed to using in-depth sleep research and implementing the best and newest sleep technologies in their mattresses in order to bring their customers the healthiest sleep possible.

They have also worked with top doctors in order to design a mattress which relieves joint pain, improves blood circulation, naturally aligns the spine, and increases overall energy.

Puffy Lux

Puffy has also engineered a Cooling Cloud foam which has adaptive and comfort properties allowing for even weight distribution and proper heat dissipation. So, no matter your body type or preferred sleeping position, the Puffy will give a full and rich sleep for many nights to come.

Puffy has also dove head first into the world of philanthropy with two donation campaigns. Their first mission is called #jumpforkids which helps give a mattress to a child in need.

Simply post a photo jumping on a bed via Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Tag the photo #jumpforkids and nominate at least 3 friends to do the same within 24 hours. For every 100 posts, Puffy will donate a mattress to a shelter for homeless youth.

Their second campaign is called #shareapuffy and also donates a mattress to a shelter for homeless youth. Simply post a photo or video with your Puffy on Instagram, tag it @puffymattress and #shareapuffy. A brand new Puffy mattress will be donated for every 10 posts from different followers.

Materials and Structure

At Puffy they decided to keep things simple with their 10 inch, two-layered mattress. Although they use only two layers of foam, they claim to have found the perfect blend for unmatched pressure relieving support. Before we get into the foam layers, we can take a look at the cover. It’s made from polyester which makes it thin, soft, and elastic. In order to offer their customers long-lasting quality, Puffy produces all their mattresses with a stain resistant cover. To ensure safety, their cover is also Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified so, no harmful chemicals or agents used while producing the cover.

With only two layers, the Puffy is easily and clearly separated. The top layer is the comfort layer, while the bottom layer is the support layer. The comfort layer is 4 inches of Puffy’s own Cooling Cloud Foam. It’s super soft and has a slow response to pressure which means the Puffy offers nice sinkage. At 4 inches, this layer of memory foam is above average compared to competitors. The great thickness of the comfort foam offers fantastic pressure relief, especially under the shoulders and hips. In addition, this top layer has been infused with gel, helping to naturally regulate body temperature. Keeping you cool and comfortable while you sleep.

The Support layer is 6 inches of high-density polyfoam. Opposite of the top comfort layer, this layer is quick to respond under pressure and offers firm support.

Motion Transfer

If you have a sleeping partner, motion transfer could be the deciding factor when choosing a new mattress. Most of us know the great motion transfer capabilities of memory foam and being full foam, the Puffy does not disappoint. The Puffy does a fantastic job at absorbing vibration and reducing movement. Though a slight amount of movement may be felt from a partner, it shouldn’t be enough to cause you to wake.

Cost and Value

With their factory direct business model, Puffy has been able to offer a great product at a decent price. Adding to the value of their mattress, Puffy also offers some nice buying incentives. First, their 101 night sleep trial allows you the opportunity to test their mattress worry free. Next, their lifetime warranty shows they truly believe in the quality and longevity of their mattress. Lastly, it’s possible to receive 0% financing for 12 months through Klarna, which means you don’t have to go completely out of pocket of your new mattress.

As stated above, Puffy is involved in two donation programs. So, if you are conscious about helping others this may also add value to the purchase of a Puffy mattress.

The Puffy mattress has a unique feel compared to many other mattresses. It offers a traditional memory foam feel which gives the user a feeling of sleeping “in” the mattress as opposed to “on” it. When you first lay on the mattress there is quite a bit of sinkage into the top comfort layer of 4 inch gel foam. This sinkage helps the mattress to truly contour to your bodies curves and offer exceptional pressure relief. To help with the comfort of temperature regulation, Puffy has infused the top layer with gel. The gel helps in absorbing and dispersing your body temperature throughout the night.

On the Puffy website, they boast about creating a mattress that adapts to all sleepers. Although, it should be said the extra soft characteristics of the Puffy cater more to side sleepers.

Durability and Maintenance

Everyone wishes for an investment that is long lasting and gives a return on the cost. When thinking about the durability of foam our attention goes to the density. The Puffy mattress is quite new and has yet to be tested by time, so some may understandably have reservations. However, Puffy offers a lifetime warranty which should help ease the minds of those concerned. Also, looking at the foam used in the Puffy we see the expected density for a mattress of this quality and price.

The Puffy is relatively maintenance free. No flipping or rotation needed. A good quality mattress protector is always recommended in order to offer an extra layer of protection from spills and stains.

Firmness and Sinkage

The Puffy is offered in one firmness option which comes in around 5 on a scale from 1 to 10. Although, many have said the mattress goes more to the softer side of the firmness scale. In all honesty, it should not be a surprise that the Puffy is so soft and has so much sinkage. There is a very thick top layer of comfort foam accompanied by only one thick layer of support. I believe it’s safe to say that if firmness is your preference, you should look elsewhere.

To get an idea of how the Puffy will respond while bearing weight, take a look at our sinkage test chart.

Production and Certifications

Puffy is proud to say, every step of making their mattress takes place in the United States. Starting from the design, through the production of the cover and foam, down to the final step of sewing and assembly, 100% made in the USA.

When making foam, normal production tends to use chemicals that can be harmful to someone’s health. To help create a common standard for the foam market, CertiPUR-US acts as an independent and accredited testing laboratory. With the CertiPUR-US certification, you can be sure your foam product has been manufactured without ozone-depleting chemicals, without PBDE flame retardants(known to be toxic), without Mercury, lead or other heavy metals, without formaldehyde, without phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. It also has low VOC (volatile organic compound) emission for indoor air quality.

Off-gassing is when a chemical odor remains after unpacking and can be common especially with memory foam mattress. The Puffy has the potential for some off-gassing, however, it should air out within a few days.
