The Brooklyn Signature Hybrid Mattress: Unbiased Review by Sleeping Culture

About Brooklyn Bedding

Brothers John and Rob Merwin are the owners and founders of the Brooklyn Bedding company. Known by many simply as the “mattress whisperers”, they got their start in 1995 as self taught mattress entrepreneurs operating solely in Phoenix, Arizona. Building the business from the ground up, original deliveries were made using a refurbished Wonder Bread truck and an old Motorola brick cellphone. The evolution of internet shopping made it possible for them to branch out into online sales and grow their business beyond Phoenix. In 2008 they re-branded and also took lead in the market by being among the first companies to offer a bed-in-a-box. Their product line has grown tremendously, now offering six mattress along with pillows, sheets, protectors, and frames. Brooklyn Bedding also supports a great cause by working with organizations helping supply basic needs to families and foster homes, whether it be mattresses, bed sheets, or pillows.

Materials and Structure

The Brooklyn Signature mattress comes in at 11.5 inches tall and is designed as a hybrid, simply meaning it’s layers of foam combined with a layer of support coils. In total there are three layers of foam and one base layer of coils.

The cover of the Brooklyn mattress is a blend of cotton and polyester which has been quilted with an inch of foam. Making the cover very soft and breathable.

Getting into the layers, we first find a 2 inch top layer of patented TitanFlex foam. This layer was engineered to combine the contouring properties of memory foam with the responsiveness of latex foam.

Next up is another 2 inch layer of TitanFlex foam, however this layer has a firmer transitional purpose giving deeper compression support for the user.

The core of the Brooklyn Signature has been engineered with a 6 inch base layer of pocketed coils. With up to 1,024 individually encased coils the mattress offers increased support with decreased motion transfer. Coils in a hybrid always encourage good airflow and breath-ability. Ensuring your body temperature is comfortably maintained throughout the night.

Finally, to finish off the mattress layers is a 1 inch base layer of high density foam for added durability and to provide a foundation for the individual coils to rest on.

Motion Transfer

Many sleepers prefer the support and response that a coil mattress provides. With that being said, many sleepers also prefer the softness and cozy feel that a memory foam mattress gives.

Both options have positives and negatives. Coil mattresses are negatively known for their horrible motion transfer abilities. Memory foam mattress are negatively know for their sinking feeling that makes you feel stuck. Hybrids were engineered to give the best of both worlds.

With its thick layers of comfort foam on top of the pocketed support coils the Brooklyn Signature Hybrid does a pretty decent job absorbing movement. It is hard to compete with a fully foam mattress, however this mattress holds its own and you shouldn’t be bothered by your partner’s movements, should they make any.

Cost and Value

Brooklyn Bedding uses top quality materials in all of their mattresses. The Brooklyn Signature remains their top seller which should point to its great craftsmanship and durability. It’s also quite affordable compared to similar brand mattresses.

Adding to the value of this mattress is the company’s great reputation. Offering 0% financing through Affirm for 3, 6, or 12 months, a 120 night sleep trial, free shipping, and a 10 year warranty. Comfort

First impressions of the Brooklyn Signature are very nice as the cotton cover is soft to the touch and the quilted foam adds great cushioning. The thick layers of TitanFlex foam do an amazing job conforming to your body giving excellent pressure relief exactly where you need it most.

One very nice feature of this mattress is the quick response of the foam layers. Making it comfortable to turn over and move freely without feeling stuck in the foam top.

Lastly, another key to this mattresses comfort is its breath-ability. The core support coils and TitaniumGel infused layers truly help to displace heat and promote good airflow, making sure you get a cool nights sleep.

Durability and Maintenance

A good quality durable mattress should be able to last you many years. Likewise if you pay a thousand dollars for one you probably expect nothing less. With a hybrid, there are two factors we can look at to establish durability. The density of the foam, and the number of coils.

The Brooklyn Signatures 3.5 pounds per cubic foot foam density should offer good durability over time. In the coil layer, a typical queen sized mattress should have no less than 800 coils. The Brooklyn Signature boasts 1,024 coils in its queen sized mattress, ensuring long lasting durable support.

To increase the lifespan of the mattress, it’s recommended to rotate it every six to eight months. On top of that, periodically vacuuming with a brush attachment will also help prolong the mattresses life.

Firmness and Sinkage

The Brooklyn Signature is offered in three different firmness options, soft, medium, and firm. On their site they have each firmness clearly described.

Recommending to choose soft if you sleep mainly on your side. If you need more pressure point relief and softer support for your body’s curves. And lastly, if you prefer the traditional memory foam hugged feel.

Recommending to choose medium if you are a back, stomach or side sleeper. If you would like a balance between contouring and support. If you enjoy the feeling of sleeping more above your bed’s top layers. Or if you are a couple looking for neutral ground when it comes to your beds firmness.

Their firm option is recommended if you sleep mainly on your stomach or back. If you prefer not to sink deeply into your mattress. If you need extra lumbar support. Or if you would like a smoother, flatter surface for sleeping.

To help get an idea of how the Brooklyn Signature mattress will respond while bearing weight, take a look at our sinkage test results. Keep in mind these results were obtained from Brooklyn’s medium firm option.
